JULY 8 at 8PM: SHAI WOSNER, pianist

Shai Wosner has received international acclaim for his insightful performances of a broad repertoire—from Schubert and Beethoven to Schoenberg and Kurtág. As a recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician known for his imaginative programming, Shai links music of the past and present, most recently by pairing concertos and capriccios by Haydn and Ligeti on his Onyx Classics recording with the Danish Symphony. He is a recipient of Lincoln Center’sMartin E. Segal Award, an Avery Fisher Career Grant and a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award—a prize that he used to commission Michael Hersch’s concerto Along the Ravines, which he then performed with the Seattle Symphony and Deutsche Radio Philharmonie.

Described as a “Schubertian of unfaltering authority and character” by Gramophone, Shai has embarked this season on a solo recital series that focuses on the last six piano sonatas of Schubert. He has spoken of these pieces as “six thick novels, rich with insight about the human condition.” He has also maintained his focus on Beethoven, with recent performances of the last three piano concertos, the complete music for cello and piano (with Ralph Kirshbaum), and his Bridge to Beethoven recital series with violinist Jennifer Koh. Shai’s extensive discography includes works by Schubert, Beethoven, Janacek and Brahms--recordings that have garnered accolades from many, including critics at Gramophone, Fanfare, and The New York Times, which listed his Haydn/Ligeti disc as one of the "Top Classical Albums of 2016."
